A Short Story
It was raining hard. So hard that the rain was coming in sideways. Umbrella? Yeah. That was the idea several minutes ago. Torn fabric and twisted metal was all that remains of it. "Might as well get used to it" he said aloud to no one in particular. It would not have mattered if anyone was even close. The howl of the wind was drowning out all but the loudest of sounds.
Still, he knew he had to go. Turning back now was not an option so he leaned forward, putting his face down, and forced his way against the storm.
He saw the lights in the distance. It would not be long now. Soon he was inside. It was warm and dry. He quickly found what he was looking for. Stuffing the package under his coat, he opened the door and stepped out. The force of the wind nearly knocked him over while the chill cut through his bones like an ice pick.
Still, he had to go on. She would be counting on him and failure was not an option.
He turned his thoughts to how she would greet him. Especially after this errand for her. He was already at home earlier. Comfortable. Warm. Content. She softly came into the room and settled next to him. He reached out to touch her like he always did and she looked up at him with loving hungry eyes. "Hi Sweetie" he said. She did not have to even speak a single word. He knew what that look meant.
Finally he reached the front door and turned the key. The tumblers clicked sending an echo through the house. He was in and there she was, waiting for him.
Pulling the package from under his coat, he showed her what he had brought. She looked at him with loving eyes and her excitement filled the room.
He quickly tore open the package letting it fall to the floor and slumped against the door.
"Go on, girl. Suppertime" he told her.
He promised himself that he would never forget to pick up some dog food again. Copyright R.C.Rutter 2009
